On assignment for The New York Times Magazine in a Taliban compound in Afghanistan, Addario was able to photograph with more freedom than she could on the streets of tribal villages. This image of a truckload of heavily armed young fighters illustrated the 2008 story, “Right at the Edge,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009.
