Stromboli, which occupies its own island in the Aeolian Archepelago between Sicily and southwestern Italy, has been erupting nearly continuously for more than two millennia. Currently the most active volcano in the world, it erupts about every 20 minutes. Called the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean,” it typically produces small explosions that throw clots of molten lava tens or hundreds of feet into the air.
