FEATURES & COMMENTS: With SCSI-II and USB standard on all models and an optional Firewire port (on the model shown and tested), this scanner is sure to blast you away with its speed, image quality, and features. With the Epson Twain Pro software you'll be impressed with all the options for maximizing your scan output and color correction. And with the extra scanning utilities, such as Monaco EZ color, you can calibrate your monitor and system to help produce extremely accurate scans via the scanner's support for ColorSync and ICM 2.0. The Twain Pro driver includes an auto enhance button, color correction, brightness/contrast, and color management settings, and all of your adjustments can be seen on the scalable preview scan. (Scalable preview screens allow you to increase the size of your preview if you have a larger monitor.) Batch scanning is also possible with this unit, so you can set up scans of several small prints. While it's a bit high-priced for even the basic Artist configuration, this extremely quiet scanner is our top choice among the units we tested.

TEST RESULTS: Color Accuracy: Extremely high (Overall Delta E: 9.6, best 90%: 8.3, worst 10%: 20.7). Shadow Detail: Extremely High. Highlight Detail: High. Image Quality Rating: Extremely high. Speed: Extremely fast.

FEATURES & COMMENTS: At $299, the Perfection 1200S (the unit we tested) is perfect for SOHO, Business, and Education applications. While the basic 1200U model features a fast USB connection, the 1200S comes equipped with an even faster SCSI connection and SCSI card. In both models, the one-button scanning function and software helps to scan text into OCR files, and fax and e-mail images.

The 1200 series also has a maximum hardware resolution of 1200x2400 ppi via Epson's advanced Micro Step Drive, which features an extremely precise stepper motor, memory and intelligent image processing. By using the "half stepping" method, the scanner is able to capture detail by scanning 2400 ppi instead of only 1200 ppi. The scanner driver has sophisticated color controls and scalable preview window. You can also get full screen previews of cropped areas.

The scanner is a bit noisy and only stores images in 24-bit color depth, but color accuracy was extremely high, and the scan times tied the E-1600 for fastest of the bunch. So for the price this is an excellent scanner with a wide choice of connections.
