Hands On: Nikon Coolscan 8000 ED

(continued)

This scanner delivers extremely high resolution (at a tested 60lp/mm), maintaining highly detailed shadows and highlights (even in high-contrast slides) using multisampling controls. While there was some noticeable, but acceptable, shadow noise in single pass scans, multisampled scans over 4X were clean as a whistle. Color accuracy was also excellent, with very pleasing skin tones, fine color gradations, and extremely accurate neutrals. As a result of our tests and the multisampling capabilities found in this unit, we gave it an extremely high image-quality rating.

Does it beat out the Polaroid SprintScan 120? It's nearly a tie, with the Polaroid delivering its best output faster without multisampling. But if you've got any dusty or scratched originals, or want to be prepared in case one shows up someday, the Nikon Coolscan 8000 ED (with Digital ICE) should be your first choice.
