Shopping the Internet the Checkrated Way

For almost twenty years, Popular Photography’s exclusive Checkrated Reader Protection Program has helped our readers avoid problems when buying merchandise from the advertisers in our mail order section. Now, this same service is being extended to users of Popular Photography’s web site. When you order any merchandise from one of our advertisers, you can call upon us for help if you have a problem that falls within the scope of our Checkrated Program.

Every advertiser displaying the Checkrated Seal has agreed to follow a code of good conduct when dealing with readers of Popular Photogaphy. The provisions of this code are spelled out on the Checkrated page in each month’s issue.

It is important to note that the Checkrated program is NOT an endorsement of any particular dealer. It merely signifies that they will abide by our Checkrated guidelines and that if there is a problem, they will work with us to resolve it.

Over the years, we have found that many of the problems we are called on to resolve stem from the failure to follow a few simple common-sense rules designed to avoid misunderstandings. Listed below are a few suggestions that should help you shop Popular Photography’s web site internet with confidence.

First, know the product you want to buy. For example, if you are interested in purchasing a digital camera, know what type of media storage card it accepts. Don’t expect the dealer to give you a short course on digital imaging. Check with the manufac turer to find out what accessories are packaged with the camera.

If you are not sure of which particular; model might be the most suitable for your needs, check the product reports published in Popular Photography for features and specifications. (You can get copies of camera and lens test reports from us for a slight fee.)

Second, check prices. Keep in mind the old maxim that if a price is too good to be true it probably isn’t. The ad pages of the magazine permit an easy comparison of prices. If you see a price that seems significantly lower than prices listed by other advertisers, check further before placing any orders.
