You should be aware of the differences between “gray” merchandise and “U.S,” products. The gray merchandise is imported by third parties and usually does not carry an official warranty valid in the United States. U.S. merchandise is imported by the manufacturer or its official representative and not only carries an American warranty but is also eligible for rebates and special offers. Although both types items identical except for model designations, we generally advise spending the extra money to get the American warranty and the assurance of having the manufacturer standing behind your purchase.
Beware of calls from dealers asking you to confirm an order you have placed with them on the internet. We have found that in many cases, this is an attempt to pressure you into buying extras you may not need or want. If you are told the item you’ve ordered in on back order and should be available in or six weeks but they do have a more expensive item available for immediate delivery, CANCEL your order. There are too many reliable dealers asking for your business to put up with any sleazy games.
Try to make certain that the items you buy are the items you want to keep. All of our advertisers will accept returns but you may be liable for shipping and handling charges, which are usually not refundab le, plus a restocking charge. Incidentally, while we do have some control over advertised prices, we do not have any control ov er shipping and handling charges. Our Checkrated shoppers have frequently found that a dealer will honor a very low selling price but make up for it by charging what we feel is excessive shipping and handling fees. Always ask about shipping and handling expenses when you place your order.
When you do order, USE A CREDIT CARD. Don’t send a money order and NEVER send cash.
What happens if you should have a problem? First, call your credit card company immediately and place the charge in dispute. Second, write to us and give us complete details and enclose copies of any invoices, shipping receipts, etc.
We know e-mail and the telephone is fast and handy but we need a complete explanation of your problem together with documentation before we can take up your problem with our advertiser.
Finally, the Checkrated Program does not cover used equipment, software or non-imaging products such as VCRs, camcorders or DVD players.
We hope that your experiences with Popular Photography’s advertisers will satisfactory in every way. If they are not, we’ll do our best to resolve your problem so that you get the service you are entitled to as a reader of Popular Photography.
