SpinFX Kickstarter Proposes Unique Light Painting Tool

Remember the LightScythe, a homebrew light painting rod that a person hacked together last year? Now a Kickstarter project wants to do something similar, but in a far more fluid and flexible form. SpinFX is trying to raise $10,000 for a series of hoops and poi with programmable and controllable LEDs embedded all along the their length.

The San Francisco performance art troupe, The Aurora Light Painters may define “quirky” or “silly” to serious photographers. But those probably aren’t labels that they would mind. Founded by portrait photographer Julian Cash (who created coffee table photo book calledThe People of Burning Man), the six person troupe creates live projected light painting images. In their words:

Gavin from Sydney, aka Mechatronics, has hacked together an unbearably impressive but comparatively simple piece of hardware. Dubbed the LightScythe, it's a two-meter long strip of programmable LEDs, controlled by a small receiver, and data sent from a nearby computer.
