Fujifilm Introduces FinePix F40fd

The latest in the F series features face-detection technology and a staggering upper light-sensitivity limit of ISO 2000.

Fujifilm Introduces FinePix F40fd

Fujifilm has replaced its ultracompact FinePix F20 point-and-shoot with the even slimmer FinePix F40fd -- that's fd for face detection, an increasingly common feature in pocket cameras.

Fuji's version can identify as many as 10 faces in a scene and adjust focus and exposure accordingly. That's a handy tool, but perhaps more remarkable is the F40fd's upper light-sensitivity limit of ISO 2000. In addition to the obvious advantages for low-light photography, the camera's high ISO options are combined with fast shutter speeds by the F40fd's Picture Stabilization mode to reduce blur.  If the F40fd can pull off ISO 2000 images that aren't a muddy mess, we'll be impressed.

Other fancy features on the F40fd's list include the i-Flash system that Fuji claims does a superior job of evaluating light levels to set flash intensity, a Dual Shot mode that takes one shot with flash and one without in quick succession, and support for the IR-Simple standard for fast infrared image transfer to compatible devices such as TVs and printers.

The F40fd also employs the dual xD-Picture Card/SD media slots and new graphical user interface that Fuji is introducing throughout its lineup of pocket cameras. Equipped with an 8.3-megapixel Super CCD HR and a 36mm-108mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8-5.1 3x zoom lens, this new F model also sports a 2.5-inch LCD with a high 230,000-pixel resolution.

The FinePix F40fd will be available in March 2007 for a retail price of $299.
