Editor's Choice 2006: Ultrathin Compact Cameras

(continued)

Pentax Optio T10

If you put a very large LCD monitor into a very small camera, where do you fit the controls? This six- megapixel model offers a clever and increasingly popular solution: Its jumbo three-inch LCD is touch sensitive. In addition to composing on the screen, you use it to select items from control menus with a PDA-style pen. This minimizes the need for real buttons. You can also use the pen to “draw” on your photographs -- useful for making notes or creating sketch-like effects without resorting to a computer. How does the T10 stay so thin? When it retracts into its 19.5-millimeter, aluminum-alloy body, groups of elements slide sideways, allowing them to be stored with less space between them. About $350.
