Heir Superiority
Canon promised that it would continue to upgrade its 35mm SLR line as needed. But are the higher AF speeds, improved flash systems, and “exterior enhancements” claimed for the new Canon EOS Elan 7n and 7ne (with Eye Control) worthwhile improvements over the just-discontinued Elan 7 and 7e (tested March 2001)?
Improved flash system: When accessory Canon EX Speedlites and Canon lenses encoded to read subject distances are used, the flash is said to provide exposure accuracy no matter the reflectivity or brightness of the surrounding area. We proved the efficacy of this system in our test of the Canon EOS A2e (November 1993).
Exterior enhancements: LCD can be backlit by pressing a button, exterior is upgraded from dull black to satin finish, clearer top control markings plus embossed symbols and numerals on dials. All other features remain same as on the 7 and 7e.
Autofocus speed: In high or moderate light levels, the old and new cameras tested at about the same focusing speeds. But at EV 1 (very low light), the new cameras had higher focusing speeds than any of the present Canon 35mm and digital cameras tested. At EV 0 (extremely low light), only the 7n and 7ne were able to autofocus at all! This is a sensational performance and may be worth the upgrade alone.
Approx. street prices: EOS 7n body, $320; 7ne body, $350. For more info: www.canoneos.com; 800-652-2666.
