As the EX designation indicates, this digital-only (“DC”) lens is designed for pro shooters, with a polycarb exterior over an all-metal interior chassis. It’s Sigma’s widest-angle, nonfisheye lens for digital cameras, and its closest-focusing nonmacro lens. Optically loaded, six of its 14 elements are either of super-low dispersion glass or are molded, hybrid aspherics. Together, they promise (and deliver) nearly aberration-free performance in a relatively compact package and modest price.
HANDS ON: A bout average in size for the new crop of digital-only ultrawides, this lens is several ounces lighter than the comparable Tokina, but several ounces heavier than comparable Canon and Tamron zooms. Like all Sigma EX (pro) lenses, it appears very sturdy and well constructed. It wears Sigma’s matte black and metallic-flecked “Pro” surface, with ribbed and rubberized focusing and zoom rings of ample size. The turning action of both zoom and focusing rings is silkily well damped. Its HSM motor provided very fast and extremely quiet autofocusing on our Canon EOS 20D test body.
