SOUPED-UP DSLR
Closely following its first digital SLR, the SD9, Sigma has released the improved SD10 ($1,600 street). This new model has a similar overall design, viewfinder, camera controls, and many of the core features of the SD9 (reviewed February 2003), but is lighter since it does not require two CR123A batteries in the handle. For image capture, the SD10 uses a similar CMOS sensor, the Foveon X3 3.4MP PRO-10M. But now, according to Pop’s lab tests, it delivers improved resolution—on par with a 6MP CCD, extremely accurate color, lower noise, an expanded ISO range from 100 to 1600, and extremely high image quality. It still only records RAW files to CF Type I/II cards. But there’s a three-color histogram in playback mode and a very useful image sensor dust protector (a clear glass window that seals up the camera just behind the lensmount). And, says Sigma, the SD10’s AF system features improved low-light sensitivity. There’s also wireless TTL flash capability with the new Sigma Electronic Flash EF-500 DG Super ($200 street). Photo Pro 2 software (included), required to convert camera files into JPEG or TIFF images, includes the new X3 Fill Light tool for improving high-contrast and backlit photos.
The SD10 maintains compatibility with most Sigma SA-mount 35mm lenses (with a 1.7X 35mm lens factor), and also accepts several new Sigma DC lenses. (The lens shown with the camera is the lightweight 18–50mm f/3.5–5.6 DC lens. It’s sold in a lens package with the 55–200mm f/4–5.6 DC lens for about $250.) Both new lenses and the SD10 should be available by the time you read this. (Sigma; 631-585-1144; www.sigma-photo.com)
REEL STORAGE CAPACITY
Verbatim’s DigitalMovie DVD+R discs look like old-fashioned movie reels, while their CD-R discs resemble 45-rpm records. The nostalgia, however, is only ink-deep. These 4.7GB DVDs make a CD look antiquated. If your computer can burn DVD+R format, these discs can work at speeds up to 4x and hold thousands of digital images or up to two hours of digital video. A three-pack streets for $12. (Verbatim; 800-421-4188; www.verbatim.com)
