Boot Up Your Filters
As mentioned in last month’s feature “FX Filters Made Easy,” traditional, optical-filter-maker B+W has entered the field with its Digital Filter sets ($65 each, list). These Adobe Photoshop-compatible plug-ins work with a range of other image editors, including Corel Photo-Paint 11 on Windows and Mac OS X. The Outdoor set includes brightening, graduated blue, graduated neutral-density, polarizing enhancer, summertime, and warming filters. The Portrait & Family set has black-and-white (cool), enhance colors, luna, soft-focus, summertime, and warming filters. (Schneider Optics Inc.; 631-761-5000; www.schneideroptics.com)
Digital Page-turner
Why just back up images to a CD when you can create a digital photo album at the same time? E-Book Systems’ FlipAlbum Recorder ($250 street) does just that, and, at 7.9x5.8x1.2 inches and 1.4 pounds, it won’t create clutter. The unit burns images directly from a memory card to a CD and makes FlipAlbum slide shows from photos that can be played back on the recorder or on a computer with free FlipAlbum software. These slide shows, which digitally mimic animated-book pages, turn as you move from one picture to the next—and can include music or sound effects. The recorder has S-video, composite video, and stereo mini-jack outputs, along with a built-in CompactFlash reader. A CF adapter ($30 street) for SM/SD/MM/MS cards is also available.
