Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D

Price (MSRP): $800.00
Megapixel: 10.2
TYPE: Digital SLR

The Pentax K200D is the successor to the Penax K100D (and K100D Super) digital SLR. The K200D is a compact 10.2-megapixel consumer SLR with the same CCD as the Pentax K10D and shares the build quality and dust- and weather-proofing of Pentax's more advanced SLRs. The company notes that the K200D is the only weather-resistant camera in its class. This SLR also stands apart from the crowd by running on four AA batteries, and offers both sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a built-in automatic system for removing dust from the sensor. Its new Dust Alert function shows the exact location of dust particles on the LCD to make it easier to remove the stubborn bits. The K200D has a 230,000-dot, 2.7-inch LCD with a wide 160-degree viewing angle for image display and menu navigation, and provides a pentamirror optical viewfinder with 96 percent coverage and 0.85x magnification. It takes Pentax K-mount lenses, and supports Pentax's SDM lens motor for fast, quiet autofocus.

The K200D offers a broad shutter speed range of 1/4000 to 30 seconds, a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 1600, 16-segment metering, and an 11-point autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors. The camera provides a good mix of manual and automatic settings that is designed to give creative photographers the control they need while providing some guidance to less experienced shooters. In addition to manual, priority, bulb, and programmed automatic exposure with program shift, there are eight scene modes that can be tweaked manually and an Auto Picture mode that automatically selects the scene mode that it deems most appropriate for the subject and then lets the photographer make adjustments to the image tone, saturation, contrast, and sharpness. Results of the adjustments can be previewed on the LCD. There's also a Sensitivity Priority mode that lets the photographer select the ISO and then automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed.

Other useful features include an Expanded Dynamic Range function that brings out shadow and highlight detail in high-contrast scenes, white-balance fine-tuning, and white balance by color temperature. For high-speed shooting, the K200D inherits its buffer memory and drive speeds from the K10D, which Pentax says gives it the ability to capture an unlimited series of JPEGs at 1.1fps or four JPEG or RAW shots at 2.8fps. The K200D offers 22 custom functions. The K200 will be available in March 2008 in an $800 kit with Pentax's new 18-55mm lens and at a $720 retail price for the body only. The camera comes with Pentax's Photo Laboratory 3 RAW processing software and Photo Browser 3 image browser. Pentax will also sell a weatherproof vertical battery grip for the camera, the D-BG3. Priced at $129, it will be available in March.
