Pentax ist D

Pentax ist D

Price (MSRP): $1,399.95
Megapixel: 6.1
TYPE: Digital SLR

Pentax's first digital SLR, the *ist D provides an advanced set of features to serious amateur photographers in a compact yet sturdy magnesium alloy body. We found the *ist D's image quality excellent from ISO 200 to ISO 800. Visual noise ranges from very low at ISO 200 and 400 to low at ISO 800 and moderate at ISO 1600. Its autofocus is extremely fast in bright light, but it lags the competition at lower light levels. This camera offers standard manual and automatic exposure modes but no programmed automatic scene modes. Among its notable features are an excellent viewfinder, plentiful physical controls, an advanced multiple exposure mode, an autofocus assist button for use in manual focus mode, a PC-sync terminal, a 4% spot meter, 22 custom functions, both TIFF and RAW capture, and depth-of-field previewing. Limitations include a slow USB 1.1 connection for transferring images and a Pentax-dedicated hotshoe. The *ist D is compatible with Pentax’s D-BG1 vertical battery grip.
