Olympus Stylus 1030SW

Olympus Stylus 1030SW

Price (MSRP): $399.99
Megapixel: 10.1
TYPE: Ultra-Thin Digital Compact

The 10.1-megapixel Olympus Stylus 1030SW features an f/3.5-5.1, 28mm-102mm 3.6x zoom lens (35mm equivalent) with Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and aspherical elements to minimize chromatic aberration and other optical flaws, and a 230,000-dot, 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD. The camera follows in the path of previous Stylus SW models with waterproofing down to 33 feet, shock-proofing to protect it from drops from up to 6.6 and freezeproofing to keep the camera shooting at temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. The 1030SW is also crush-proof, with the ability to withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure, and has both an LED and a manometer built in. The LED can be used either as a flashlight or as a constant light source for photos and video. The manometer records the altitude or depth at which photos are taken. The camera’s lens has a water-repellant coating that prevents drops from forming on its surface. The camera is also among the first to store images on microSD memory cards, which are typically used in cell phones. The microSD format can be used with an adapter that comes with the camera; it also supports Olympus’s usual xD-Picture Cards.

The Stylus camera is designed for automatic photography. The 1030SW offers 29 shooting modes, including 4 underwater options and an underwater movie mode. The camera offers numerous fine-tuning features, including spot autofocus and metering, face-detection autofocus and auto exposure, a live histogram, and light-sensitivity settings as high as ISO 1600. The camera features Olympus’s TruePic III processor and has a digital stabilization option that boosts ISO and shutter speed settings. The camera’s continuous-shooting mode is rated to capture 3-megapixel shots at a speed of 5.2fps, but at full resolution, the rate drops to 0.7fps. The camera also shoots smooth VGA-resolution video with sound and offers a separate voice-recording mode. Other notable features include Perfect Shot Preview, which helps users preview the effects of setting changes before taking a photo; Perfect Fix, which automatically adjusts exposure, sharpens blurry areas, and corrects redeye in playback mode; and Shadow Adjustment Technology, which uses software processing to open up dark shadows while retaining highlight detail. There’s also a new in-camera panorama mode that captures three shots as the photographer pans and stitches them together automatically.

The Stylus 1030SW will be available in March 2008 with a MSRP of $399.99. Olympus will also sell new PT-041 and PT-043 underwater housings for the camera, offering protection at depths down to 130 feet.
