Olympus E-1

Olympus E-1

Price (MSRP): $2,199.00
Megapixel: 4.9
TYPE: Digital SLR

At the top of the Olympus digital SLR line, the E-1 offers an advanced feature set in a rugged magnesium-alloy body with splash-proof seals and a built-in sensor-cleaning system. The E-1 follows the Four-Thirds System standard for sensors and lenses, making it compatible with Four Thirds lenses from Olympus and third-party vendors and claiming better edge-to-edge image quality and wide-angle options than systems that use optics designed for 35mm film cameras. We found the E-1's image quality extremely high at ISO 100. Noise levels rise to moderately low at ISO 400 and unacceptable at ISO 800. The camera's autofocus system works well in bright light, but it isn’t able to focus below EV2. Low-light autofocus can be achieved with the aid of the built-in AF-assist light. On the other hand, the E-1's metering system and viewfinder are extremely accurate, and the camera provides extensive image parameter adjustments and many programmable physical controls. Aimed at professional photographers, this camera offers standard manual and automatic exposure modes, but no programmed automatic scene modes and no built-in flash. Among its notable features are autofocus with a manual-assist mode, which allows you to fine-tune the focus using the manual focus ring; a 2 percent spot meter; numerous color options; a PC-sync terminal; and interchangeable focusing screens. Relatively compact for a pro camera, the E-1 does not have a built-in vertical grip, but instead supports Olympus's BLL-1 vertical battery grip.
