It's not just the trendsetting five-megapixel resolution that makes this two-way slider our 2007 Editor's Choice Cellphone Camera of the Year. All those pixels are put to the test by a Zeiss Tessar lens, and reside in an image sensor that's unusually large for a cellphone. The chip's as big as those in many compact cameras -- and its pixels are bigger too, so the resolution doesn't come at the price of extra noise. Camera controls include scene modes and image editing; photo blogging and mobile Web gallery software are preinstalled. Integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, FM radio: Nokia is Finnish, but this GSM model is the Swiss Army knife of cellphones.
Specs on the Nokia N95 include a 5-megapixel, 1/2.5-inch sensor found on many ultracompact cameras, paired with a four-element Carl Zeiss-branded lens that is protected by a built-in cover. The f/2.9-5.5 autofocus lens provides an angle of view that's about the same as that of a 35mm lens on a 35mm film camera. The N95 also incorporates an LED flash, a 2.6-inch LCD, and a microSD memory card slot. The N95's camera functions include eight automatic JPEG shooting modes, exposure compensation, white balance and color selections, and numerous effects and editing tools available in review mode. There's also an MPEG-4 video mode that captures digitally stabilized VGA images at 30fps with stereo sound. The N95 comes loaded with photo blogging software and uses the Symbian S60 operating system, which supports many third-party imaging and other mobile software applications. Aside from its imaging capabilities, the phone runs on EDGE/GSM 850/900/1800/2100, WCDMA/HSDPA 2100, and WLAN networks. Its extensive list of features includes integrated GPS, FM radio, video and music players, Web and e-mail functions, and a secondary camera for making video calls. The N95 carries a $749 retail price and comes with a 1GB microSD card and a TV-out cable, along with other accessories. Further information is available at Nokia's microsite for N Series phones, www.nseries.com.
