Nikon's digital SLR for serious amateur photographers, the D70s provides an advanced set of features for its class in a relatively compact body. This camera is a minor upgrade to the D70, which was our 2004 Camera of the Year. We found the D70s to have excellent image quality from ISO 200 to ISO 800 and extremely high image quality at ISO 1600. Visual noise ranges from very low at ISO 200 and 400 to low at ISO 800 and moderate at ISO 1600. Its autofocus is extremely fast in bright light and still very fast in moderately low light, but it lags the competition slightly at very low light levels. In addition to standard manual and automatic exposure modes, the D70s offers a modest selection of programmed automatic scene modes. Among this camera's notable features are predictive focus tracking, a 2.5 percent spot meter, adjustable center-weighted metering, depth of previewing, auto exposure and white balance bracketing, flash sync up to 1/500 second, and wireless control of i-TTL external flash units. There is no battery grip available for this camera.
