This digital SLR combines a high-quality, weather-proof build and many of the advanced functions of a professional SLR in a compact design along with a few consumer-oriented features found on amateur cameras. We rated the D200's image quality excellent from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. Visual noise ranges from extremely low at ISO 100 and very low from ISO 200 to 800, to low at ISO 1600. Its autofocus is extremely fast in bright and moderate light, and still performs well in low light. At its super-sensitive limit of EV -2, the D200 tops the competition by focusing in 1.51 seconds. In our tests, turning on the higher-ISO noise reduction allowed the D200 to reach Extremely Low noise levels at ISO 1600. This camera offers manual and automatic exposure modes, but no programmed automatic scene modes. Among its notable features are predictive focus tracking, depth-of-field previewing, a 2 percent spot meter, an advanced battery meter, and 44 custom settings. The D200 provides both a hotshoe and a pop-up flash that can control multiple remote flash units wirelessly via Nikon’s iTTL Commander Mode. The camera is compatible with Nikon’s MB-D200 vertical battery grip and WT-3 wireless transmitter, as well as GPS devices and Lexar's LockTight secure CompactFlash cards. Nikon charges $99 extra for its Capture software for processing RAW images and controlling the camera wirelessly from a computer.
