Nikon Coolpix S550

Nikon Coolpix S550

Price (MSRP): $229.95
Megapixel: 10
TYPE: Ultra-Thin Digital Compact

The 10-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S550 features an f/3.5-5.6, 36-180mm (35mm equivalent) 5x zoom lens, and a 230,000-dot, 2.5-inch LCD with a 170-degree viewing angle. While optical image stabilization is not offered, the camera features Nikon's electronic image stabilization, which uses a motion-tracking system to calculate the optimal exposure settings for a sharp shot. Notable features include face-detection, redeye correction, Nikon's D-Lighting function for opening up shadow areas, and the company's Best Shot Selector, which takes a series of shots and saves the sharpest one. Also included are Nikon's standard 14 scene modes in addition to plain automatic shooting as well as a Panorama assist mode. The camera provides a Smile Mode that releases the shutter automatically when someone in front of the camera smiles. Its on-screen Smile Indicator gauges the degree to which your subjects are smiling on a five-point scale, and the Smile Mode can be set to fire at any of the points. It also includes a Blink Warning feature that alerts you if someone blinks during a shot. The S550, which runs on a lithium-ion battery, offers a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 2000. The camera can capture 30fps VGA video with sound and can also shoot timelapse movies. A Face Zoom-in function is available in review mode for quickly magnifying faces as you scroll through images. The Nikon Coolpix S550 will be available in March 2008 with a Plum, Graphite Black or Cool Blue finish and a MSRP of $229.95.
