More photos of this camera

Canon's Powershot SD1000, a 7.1-megapixel ultra-compact point-and-shoot, uses an f/2.8-4.9, 35mm-105mm 3x zoom lens and Canon's DIGIC III image processor to enhance performance and image quality in both photo and video modes. The SD1000 shares many features with the more expensive SD750, and the main difference is in the viewfinder hardware: The SD750 sports a 230,000-pixel, 3-inch LCD, whereas the SD1000 offers a 230,000-pixel, 2.5-inch screen, but supplements it with an optical viewfinder, which the SD750 doesn’t have.

The SD1000 offers numerous color modes, selectable nine-point face detection and center-spot autofocus, custom white balance, in camera redeye removal and a drive mode that shoots at 1.7fps when a high-speed SD card is installed. The camera captures smooth VGA-resolution video with sound and adjusts exposure and white balance continuously during video capture to compensate for changing conditions—not a given in cameras that are not primarily made for video use.
