The Canon PowerShot G9 combines 12.1-megapixel resolution with an optically stabilized 6x zoom lens, advanced camera and flash controls, and RAW capture. An update of the PowerShot G7 (Canon skipped G8 for obvious reasons), the G9 brings RAW capture back to the top of Canon’s point-and-shoot line, even offering a RAW+JPEG mode. It also improves upon its predecessor with a 230,000-pixel, 3-inch LCD and offers more advanced face-detection technology. The camera retains the G7’s f/2.8-4.8, 35mm-210mm (35mm equivalent) 6x zoom lens. However, its optical stabilization options have been expanded to include three modes, including one for panning. In the lab, the camera improves upon its predecessor, offering significantly improved noise control. The camera includes 23 shooting modes, a high ISO setting of 3200, and a hot shoe for connecting Canon EX-series flash units. The G9 features advanced face-detection technology, allowing the photographer to select a particular face to track. The camera can also automatically remove red-eye from images captured using face-detection, and zooms in on faces during review mode.

In drive mode, the camera can shoot at 1.5 frames per second with the autofocus locked or 0.7fps with continuous autofocus. Like its predecessor, the G9 offers a timelapse mode, a custom self-timer, and advanced video features. In addition to smooth VGA-resolution video with sound, the G9 can shoot in a 1024x768 mode at a somewhat choppy 15fps. The camera can adjust focus, exposure, and white balance continuously during video capture. The camera also offers a full-on audio recorder, able to record for two straight hours at up to 44.100kHz. But all the bells and whistles mean nothing if image quality isn't there. Fortunately, it is much better on the PowerShot G9 than it was in the PowerShot G7. So much so that we'd recommend against buying a PowerShot G7 on closeout prices. Instead, spend the extra cash for the PowerShot G9. Our Certified Test results show marked improvements in noise, especially at low and middle ISOs, and with Adaptive Noise cranked way up. Software for remote camera control, RAW processing, and image editing is supplied with the camera. The G9 will be available in October 2007 with a MSRP of $499.99.
