Canon Powershot G6

Canon Powershot G6

Price (MSRP): $699.99
Megapixel: 7.1
TYPE: Digital Compact

On the large side for a compact camera, the G6 offers many of the controls advanced photographers seek. It sports a comfortable grip, a flip-out LCD, a hotshoe, and a 4x zoom lens with a fast f/2.0-3.0 maximum aperture. Both manual and automatic exposure modes are available, along with autofocus-point-linked spot metering, auto exposure bracketing, and a built-in neutral density filter. There are a small number of programmed automatic exposure options, as well as a panorama mode, and the mode dial offers two custom positions. We found the G6's image quality excellent at lower ISO settings, but at ISO 400, the noise level became unacceptable. Likewise, its autofocus performed admirably in most circumstances but balked at low-contrast subjects. Unlike many advanced digital compact cameras, this model has an optical viewfinder instead of an EVF; we found it crystal clear, with good eye relief, although it provides slightly lower magnification than some competitors.
