The 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot A580 features an f/2.6-5.5, 35-140mm 4x zoom lens, and a 115,000-pixel, 2.5-inch LCD and optical viewfinder. The camera uses Canon's DIGIC III image processor, and the company claims that its autofocus systems has been improved to perform better at low light levels. The camera offers face detection, automatic redeye correction, and a motion-detection system that tracks both subject and camera movement and adjusts ISO and shutter speed settings accordingly to get a sharp, well-exposed shot. It also has a new AF-Point Zoom feature that works with face detection to show a magnified view of a subject's face on the LCD when the shutter release is pressed halfway before a shot. The A580 also features the ability to select a specific face to track in shooting mode, as well as a new Image Inspection Tool in playback mode that automatically zooms in on faces as images are viewed. The camera offers mostly automatic controls, but allows for some fine tuning with features such as spot metering, slow-sync flash, a custom self-timer, custom white balance, and adjustable contrast, sharpness, and saturation. The camera has a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 1600, runs on AA batteries, and can capture VGA video with sound at 20fps. The A580 will be available in March 2008 with a MSRP of $150.
