This midrange digital SLR has a tougher build and a more substantial feature set than Canon's lower-end Rebel XT, and it also borrows some of the image quality and shooting speed chops from Canon's more expensive pro models. With a durable, mid-sized body and a design very similar to that of both its predecessor the EOS 10D and its successor the EOS 30D, it's compatible with Canon's EF lenses, as well as digital-only EF-S optics. The 20D also supports Canon's EX-series Speedlites and meshes well with E-TTL II units. This SLR stands out in its class by offering excellent image quality, relatively low noise at high ISO settings, and a great AF system capable of focusing down to EV 0 at ISO 100. Thanks to its superfast DiG!C II processor, the 20D starts up quickly and offers a fast, high-capacity drive mode. However, it lacks the spot meter and larger LCD that Canon added to the 30D, instead providing 9-percent Partial metering and a relatively low-resolution 1.8-inch LCD. Wide-angle fans won't be thrilled with its 1.6X lens-conversion factor either. The 20D doesn't capture TIFFs, but you can process its RAW images with the included Digital Photo Professional 2.1 software.
