Lecture Series on Collecting Contemporary Art

School of Visual Arts (SVA), in conjunction with The Affordable Art Fair (AAF), will present two panel discussions for new and experienced collectors of contemporary art and photography.

Smart Choices: Building Your Collection
Saturday, June 17, 2006, 2pm
 
Developing a Collection: Buying and Owning Photography
Sunday, June 18, 2006, 2pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA), in conjunction with The Affordable Art Fair (AAF), will present two panel discussions for new and experienced collectors of contemporary art and photography. On Saturday, June 17, 2pm, writer, critic and SVA faculty member Monroe Denton will lead a discussion entitled Smart Choices: Building Your Collection. The panelists will cover such issues as buying art as an investment, doing research and specializing in various media. On Sunday, June 18, 2pm, art dealer W.M. Hunt will moderate a panel entitled Developing a Collection: Buying and Owning Photography, with discussion of edition size, printing processes and other considerations unique to the medium. Admission to each program is free with AAF admission. Both programs take place at The Affordable Art Fair at the Metropolitan Pavillion, 125 West 18th Street, New York City.

Althea Viafora Kress, commentator and advisor on contemporary and new art and culture, host of Collector's Forum on WPS1 internet radio

SVA is also participating in AAF as an exhibitor. The College will show new and recent work in a range of media by 11 artists who are 2006 SVA graduates. Participating artists include: Michael Bilsborough (MFA Illustration as Visual Essay), Steven Bindernagel (MFA Fine Arts), Ryan Brown (BFA Fine Arts), Jesse Cesario (BFA Photography), Ogechi Chieke (MFA Computer Art), Max Dworkin (BFA Photography), Adam Hester (BFA Photography), Allison Hester (MFA Fine Arts), Ricky Sears (MFA Fine Arts), Amy Stein (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) and Jae-Kwon Youn (MFA Fine Arts).
 
AAF hours are: Friday, June 16, 12noon - 8pm; Saturday, June 17, 12noon – 8pm; Sunday, June 18, 11am – 6pm. General admission is $12/day, $9/day for students and seniors, $7/day for groups. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge.
 
The Affordable Art Fair (AAF) makes the art world accessible to thousands of visitors each year with a selection of contemporary art in all media under $5,000. The Fair attracts new collectors, designers, architects and young urban professionals to discover and buy paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and prints. AAF launched in London in 1999 and has since expanded to Sydney, Melbourne, Bristol and New York. This year's New York fair will host over 60 galleries, approximately half of them from Europe, Canada and South America.
