Ask Mike

August 2006

PP0806AskMikeQ: On my camera, I have a choice of three resolution settings, (Large, Medium, and Small) and three JPEG compressions (Fine, Normal, and Basic). If I’m running out of space on my memory card but want to maintain the highest image quality possible, should I choose the Normal or Basic JPEG setting, or reduce the resolution to Medium or Small?

A: To get the best image quality, first set your JPEG to Normal and keep your resolution set at Large. This should give you quite a few more shots with negligible loss in quality.

Then, as you come closer to running out of memory, select the Basic compression setting. Only as a last resort should you choose either the Medium or Small resolution setting.
