Ask Peter

August 2006

PP0806ask-pete.Q: I would like to get more serious about lighting. I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT and Canon’s Speedlite 430EX, and want to buy a flash meter next. Can you recommend one?

A:
Yes, the one in your camera. Learn how to use it before buying a second. Try experimenting with flash in the manual AE mode, for example. Play with synchro sun and dragging the shutter.

Wait on a handheld flash meter until you upgrade to studio strobes and really need one. For now, get a reflector with stand and clamp, and practice creative lighting with your 430EX and the sun.
