As bassist for the group Hole and later Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur has often set up cameras with shutter and timer releases on the stage floor, next to her bass pedals, so she could play music and photograph at the same time.
"When I'm making music, I think about photographing it," says Auf der Maur, who studied photography at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. "I've been doing photography a lot longer than I've been doing music."
Toward the end of college, Auf der Maur was asked to join Courtney Love's band, Hole, which gave her a chance to "see the world," she recalls. "I was cut short in my dedication to photography, but I continued to obsessively take pictures." Here she describes her ongoing pursuit photography as well as music. "I couldn't have one without the other," she says, "and I wouldn't trade either of them."
