Eric Clawson
Part of a series called Altered Image, the photo at left was made by Eric Clawson for a class at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio. “The piece started as a digital image,” says Clawson, who shot with a Canon EOS 5D digital SLR. “I got a 16-35mm f/2.8 zoom and was curious how it would distort faces at 16mm and at close range. I converted the image to black and white in Photoshop, inverted it, and printed it on office paper. Then I took that paper into the darkroom, ripped it up, reassembled the pieces on enlarging paper, and made a contact print.” Clawson’s photography stems from a lifetime of art. “I’ve been painting since I was old enough to hold a brush,” he says. “But I haven’t picked up brushes in a year.”

Reed+Rader
Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader met while they were attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. They helped each other with their shoots from the beginning, but it wasn’t until they both ended up at New York’s School of Visual Arts that they formally became the photography team Reed+Rader. Recipients of an honorable mention in the student work category of American Photo’s recent Images of the Year contest, the two photographers (who are now finishing up at SVA) specialize in edgy fashion photography. This fashion image was shot with a medium-format camera and strong sidelighting to reinforce a stylistic nod to 1920s German Expressionism. Visit reedandrader.com.
