We are primarily interested in articles on new or unusual phases of photography which we have not covered recently or in recent years. We do not want general articles on photography which could just as easily be written by our staff. We reserve the right to rewrite, edit, or revise any material we are interested in publishing.
Anyone wishing to write for us is advised to send a query letter, not a finished manuscript. The query should briefly describe the purpose of the proposed article, and give a sense of your writing style. Queries may be sent to the attention of John Owens, Editor-in-Chief, Popular Photography, 1633 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. (See last paragraph for e-mail submissions).
Queries should be accompanied by a sampling of how-to pictures (particularly when equipment is to be constructed or a process is involved), or by photographs which support the text. Please send duplicates only; do not send negatives or original slides. We are not responsible for the loss of original work.
All written materials should be typed double-spaced. The sender's name and address should be clearly written on the back of each print, on the mount of each slide, watermarked on digitally sent sample images, and on the first and last pages of all written material, including the accompanying letter.
Technical data should accompany all pictures, including the camera used, lens, film (or image format if digital), shutter speed, aerture, lighting, and any other points of special interest on how the picture was made.
Material mailed to us should be carefully wrapped or packaged to avoid damage. All submissions must be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed return envelope. We assume no responsibility for safe return, but will make every effort to handle and return it with care.
The rate of payment depends upon the importance of the feature, quality of the photographs, and our presentation of it. Upon acceptance, fees will be negotiated by the author/photographer and the editors of the magazine.
E-mail submissions are also welcome. Samples of your work in attached Microsoft Word files are OK (sorry, no other word processing formats can be accepted). A small selection of sample photos under 75K each in JPG format are OK. If we are interested we will request high-resolution files and hard copy versions of prints for color matching purposes. Submissions can be emailed to John Owens at PopEditor@hfmus.com.
Please note: we are unable to accept individual portfolios for review. However, we do welcome samples of your work in the form of promotional mailers, press kits, or tear sheets for our files. These should be sent to the attention of Miriam Leuchter, Managing Editor, at the above address or via email at mleuchter@hfmus.com.
