onOne Software has acquired the seam-carving application Liquid Resize, and will make its image resizing tools available as a Photoshop plug-in.
Seam carving resizes images and adapts them to different aspect ratios by reducing or expanding areas that do not show important elements of the image. This technique allows the dimensions of the images to be changed without introducing visible distortions, making it useful for creating versions of a single image to be shown on displays with varying aspect ratios. Liquid Resize was developed by Ramin Sabet and Irmgard Sabet-Wasinger, and is based on the work of Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir.
OnOne will make a free public beta of Liquid Resize available for both Windows and Mac OS X in late January 2008. It will be a stand-alone application. The company plans to make a Photoshop plug-in version of the software available in mid-2008. Pricing on the final version has not yet been announced.
