Kilgore Rangerettes
by O. Rufus Lovett (University of Texas Press, $50)
A storied women's drill team dating back to 1939, the Rangerettes of Kilgore College in Texas are a blend of precision and anachronism; as a teacher at the college, fine-art photographer Lovett has documented the group since 1989. He brings a humanistic eye to the team members and the subculture surrounding them, with images of disciplined artistry, home-grown beauty, unexpected humor, and high-stepping nostalgia. -- j.c.
