Patti Smith: Horses (1975) Before either was well known, Patti Smith asked her pal Robert Mapplethorpe to shoot her debut cover. "We always dreamed of becoming successful together," she recalled. This photo launched both careers -- hers as the poetess of punk, unkempt but elegant; his as the artist who had the uncanny sense to pose her under a triangular stream of sunlight.
