Isaac Hayes: Hot Buttered Soul (1969) Considered a landmark in soul music, this album's title was coined by Stax Record's Al Bell on a flight back from Jamaica while reading an ad for hot buttered rum. The cover shot by Christopher Whorf is all about Hayes's bald head, what Whorf called "an in-your-face declaration of blackness." -- JH
