After three months of clicking and cruising, we have found exemplary Websites from ten very different photographers, each of whom is taking the medium into new areas and new levels of communication.

Editorial and commercial photographer Douglas Menuez was something of a Web pioneer; back in 1995, his first Website documented a long-term project he shot behind the scenes in Silicon Valley. By 1999, he had expanded his site to include his varied work for magazines and advertising clients. "But a Website gets really tired if you don't continually update it, and that happened to mine -- people were starting to complain!" Menuez recalls with a laugh. "We finally did a major upgrade in 2005." The new, uncluttered version of menuez.com makes elegant use of Flash features that simulate the opening of a photo book. "To me, books are sort of the be-all and end-all of photography, so we used that as a leitmotif," Menuez says. "It's a portfolio and a representation of the physical books we make." His most recent book is Heaven, Earth, Tequila (Waterside Publishing, $40), a photographic journey through Mexico, its tequila-making industry, and colorful street scenes (above). "I'm into a range of things -- I don't want to be in a box," Menuez says, "and I like the Website to reflect that."

URL: www.menuez.com
Launched: 1995 (revamped 2005)
Designed by: Douglas Menuez with Paul Morrell and Zan Passante of Sumojack,

Web Philosophy: "The Website is indispensable as you interact with the world. We've booked jobs on the spot as someone is looking at the site. People want to see work right away -- sometimes they can't wait for FedEx."
