From her light-filled carefree portraits of California surfer girls to her lush interior shots in the Far East, Amanda Marsalis's photography, like her Website, is both sleek and idiosyncratic, reflecting the photographer's personal aesthetic. But nearly all the work that's displayed on amandamarsalis.com was shot on assignment for commercial and editorial clients, ranging from Adidas to FedEx to Newsweek and Mother Jones. "What's important to me when it comes to the Website is that it looks cohesive and at the same time displays my personal visual style throughout a variety of projects," says Marsalis, who created the site in 2003 with the firm Bluegreen Designs. She says the amount of work generated by the site is a testament to its value. "Some more ad-oriented clients still need to see a physical portfolio," she says, "but I'm constantly surprised how many clients, like photo editors, find and hire me exclusively through the Web -- and they're satisfied with that." For photographers like Marsalis, it's a new era.

Web Philosophy: "It's important to have a site that complements the photographs and doesn't dominate them. It should show off your own style and at the same time be cohesive."
