Filters vs. Photoshop
1. If you weren't using filters and planned to use Photoshop to combine the shadows from one image and the highlights from another, you would have had to meter twice: once for the sky, and once for the ground. In this case, make sure your tripod's steady, then shoot twice -- once with the grad filter, and once without -- at the same settings. In Photoshop, open both images. Click on the filter-free version. Then go to Select > All.
