Another cool aspect of the new Curves: Input and Output sliders. They let you set which dark tone you want to call black (your black point) and which light tone you want to call white (your white point). Most of the time, these should be set, respectively, to the points on the left and right of your histogram, where the lumps begin. If there's lots of space on either side, your picture will look flat.
