Using Color Curves will give you the best quality of adjustment and ensure that you don't clip your highlights or shadows. Slide the Midtone Brightness to the right to brighten the image overall, and the Shadows to the left to darken them and add more drama. Finally, slide the Highlights right to brighten them, too. The result: a brighter, higher-contrast image that doesn't look overworked.
