Even though it's best for controlling brightness and contrast rather than color, find the Curves adjustment under Enhance > Adjust Color > Adjust Color Curves. Don't worry, you don't have to know anything about Curves to add contrast or brightness to your picture -- you just have to use the sliders. Watch what happens to the graph (in step 3) as you work, and you'll be well on your way to understanding this tool should you decide to switch to Photoshop itself.
