2. Add some tone.
A little tone in the highlights and shadows can add subtle depth to b&w, and if done with a light enough hand, will make your photos more three-dimensional without being cheesy. Start with Exposure's Selenium Warm/Cool split as a preset, then, in the Color tab, pull the effect back until it's just barely noticeable.
