Nothing quite matches the thrill, excitement and action of college basketball—so when we got our hands on the all-new Pentax K-5, we figured what better place to see just how well the camera performs than a college basketball game? On a rainy Tuesday night we headed on out to scenic Newark New Jersey to catch the Seton Hall Pirates take on the nationally ranked Georgetown Hoyas. Equipped with the Pentax K-5 and a 300mm f/4 ED Pentax lens, we hit the court running.

Lighting illuminates, sure. But that’s not all. It can suggest shape and dimension, draw attention to specific subject details or qualities, freeze action, or separate your subject from the background. In this amazing image by Scott Markewitz, it does all of these things. Markewitz, based in Salt Lake City, UT, and Provence, France, is a ski, action, and adventure specialist. He was hired by helmet maker Giro to photograph professional mountain biker Paul Basagoitia doing a “Superman Seat Grab,” as the trick is called.

Looking at photographer Erik Johansson’s intricate photo manipulations, you might think of them more as digital art than photography. But in fact, Johansson explains, photography is one of the most important parts of his process—even if he uses the photos as raw material for his art. “I began learning image-editing as I learned digital photography, when I was 15,” says Norrköping, Sweden-based Johansson, now 25. “Photography is my way of expressing an idea. I’ll sketch the idea, and then use photography and software to make it happen.”

A few months ago, we spent several days shooting with a preproduction sample—a not-quite-ready-for-prime- time version—of Canon’s EOS 60D ($1,100, street, body only), and described our favorable first impressions in the October 2010 issue of the magazine. But now that we’ve been able to see how a full production model performs in the Popular Photography Test Lab, it’s clear that this 18MP Canon is going to be a big star.
