It’s been a very busy year indeed for Nikon. On top of nine new lenses in 2010, last fall it announced two more camera bodies: the midlevel D7000 and entry-level D3100. The 14.2MP D3100 ($640, street, with 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 lens) was the first to find its way to the Popular Photography Test Lab—look for our test of the D7000 next month. In addition to adding live-view still shooting and HD-video recording to this least-expensive Nikon DSLR, the D3100 proved itself in our tests a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor, the less-than-impressive D3000.

Ever tried getting a good shot out the window of a car that’s going 80 miles per hour? It gets a little bit easier when you’re in the left-hand front passenger seat of a British Audi RS6 sedan, riding with Formula 1 racing star Allan McNish. This was how Washington DC-based motorsports photog- rapher Regis Lefebure managed to capture the speed and drama of Eau Rouge, a famous seg- ment of the twisty Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in Belgium, while working on a pro- motional project for Audi in 2004.

By assuming the Cartier-Bresson “decisive moments” mantle and implying that his own images are ‘iconic,’ the Canadian wildlife photographer Scott Linstead may alienate some readers of his new book who might think him, well, presumptuous. But then they open the book.
